Microsoft to Change Desktop Search - Forbes.com

Forbes.com: "Microsoft Corp. will make changes to the program that helps Windows Vista users search their hard drives, in response to antitrust complaints from Google Inc., according to a U.S. Justice Department report issued late Tuesday."

Google (nasdaq: GOOG - news - people ) filed a 49-page document with the Justice Department in April claiming Vista's desktop search tool slowed down competing programs, including Google's own free offering, and that it's difficult for users to figure out how to turn off the Microsoft (nasdaq: MSFT - news - people ) program.

Microsoft initially dismissed the allegations, saying regulators had reviewed the program before Vista launched. However, Brad Smith, Microsoft's general counsel, said in an interview last week that the company was willing to make changes if necessary.

Tuesday's regularly scheduled status report on Microsoft's post-antitrust business practices detailed a compromise that would give computer users clearer options for picking a non-Microsoft desktop search program.

Currently, when Vista users browse through their documents, access the control panel, or do other system-related tasks, a Vista search box appears in the upper-right corner of the window. That box will remain, and it will continue to use the Microsoft search engine, but Microsoft will also add a link to the default desktop search program. LINK

Across the Nation, TB patient to get lung tissue removed

DENVER, COLORADO (http://www.chicagotribune.com/) -- Surgeons said Thursday that they will remove a tennis-ball-sized section of lung from Atlanta attorney Andrew Speaker, the air traveler who set off a worldwide scare when it was revealed that he carries an extremely drug-resistant form of tuberculosis.

Removing the damaged lung tissue that contains most of the bacteria responsible for Speaker's TB will allow antibiotics to be more effective and eliminate the damaged tissue that serves as a breeding ground for the bacteria, surgeons said. The operation is planned in July.

Clinton, Obama fight for Illinois dollars

CHICAGO (AP) - Barack Obama lives here, but some of the state's leading Democratic fundraisers are opening their wallets for former Illinoisan Hillary Rodham Clinton.

1 of Obama's chief rivals for president, Clinton is having her second fundraiser in Illinois later this month.

Her hosts are high-profile attorneys, a wealthy philanthropist, longtime Clinton family friends and business leaders, including a son of the Reverend Jesse Jackson, although the civil rights leader backs Obama.

Clinton campaign spokesman Blake Zeff says the New York senator is trying to capitalize on a May fundraiser in Chicago that raked in about $300,000.

Raising money in Obama's home state won't be easy for Clinton. But there are dollars for her here because she grew up in a Chicago suburb and has political alliances here that date to her years as first lady.

Why was baby abandoned?

The Prince Albert Daily Herald

Nothing tugs at heartstrings like a new baby. Precious, helpless, vulnerable, innocent. These are all words that come to mind when talking about a newborn.

But in the case of a mother who left her baby boy in a Wal-Mart bathroom after giving birth, one word seems to crop up repeatedly: Why?

Why did this happen? Why would a woman feel she had no other choice but to leave her baby? Why did she feel she had nowhere else to turn?

Why is an important question in this case. But we also need to ask others what we can do to keep this from happening again. Where are the gaps in services? If the mother comes forward, how will our community respond? Is there room for compassion and understanding? How can we support this child who comes into the world in such sad circumstances?

To the credit of this community, this last question - how we will support the newborn - is already being answered.

Early in his young life, this baby boy has had people looking out for him: store staff who provided a quick response and called 911; emergency service workers; police officers investigating the case; social service workers; and countless people sending good thoughts his way as he stays at hospital in Saskatoon, where he is reported to be in serious but stable condition.

And people are sending more than good thoughts. Wal-Mart is accepting donations at the Prince Albert store for the newborn. The question of this baby's future is one that won't be answered quickly. But if we begin the process of understanding how he came into the world so tragically, hopefully, the question of "why" won't arise again.

Police release surveillance video images in case of abandoned baby

City Police have released video images of a woman suspected of giving birth in a Wal-Mart bathroom and then abandoning her baby.

In the first of three video images from the police, the women is shown entering the Wal-Mart Store at 5:05 p.m

The woman appears to be a height of between five-feet and five-foot-three and wearing a dark three-quarter-length jacket and light pants, says a press release from City Police.

Close examination of the video images show that there may be a white or light colored emblem or lettering just below the collar on the back of the jacket.

In another image, the unknown mother is seen exiting the woman’s washroom and leaving the store at 5:19 p.m.

It appears in the surveillance video that the mother was in the store alone. However, police say it is possible that she had assistance outside of the store.

Although police have received and investigated some tips, they have not been able to identify the unknown mother at this time.

Police are asking the assistance of the public and hope that the surveillance video will assist in identifying the mother.

Any tips can be called in to 953-4222 or anonymous tips can be called into Crime Stoppers 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).
